Glimpse of the Past

An old advertisement of our establishment

Seven decades of colourful association ...

DILIP DANDEKAR Chairman & Managing Director, Camlin Limited

As M/s. G. C. Laha Pvt. Ltd. celebrate the cente-nary, we, at Camlin , feel extremely proud of our association with them over past seven decades. This association began when my father Shri D.P. alias Kaka Saheb Dandekar, the Founder of Camlin, launched the brands “Horse” and “Camel” with the Swadeshi spirit at heart. After having established in West and North India in those forming years, Shri Kaka Saheb aimed at Kolkata market in East India in 1936. And the obvious choice for the launch the products in Kolkata market was M/s. G. C. Laha Pvt. Ltd. who were acknowledged as the dealers of undisputed service in not only Kolkata but also other markets across the country in the pre-independent days.

In fact, they were a leading importer and seller of number of foreign brands of art material and stationery products such as Winsor & Newton. In appreciation of M/s. G. C. Laha’s enthusiasm & customer service, M/s.Winsor & Newton sent the specially designed furniture by sea from U.K. for storage, display & dispensing of their products. Yet Shri Girindra Coomar Laha and then Shri Bishwanath Laha were impressed by the products indigenously manufactured by Shri Kaka Saheb. Their support was of great significance in those days and it did help Camlin to establish the roots in Kolkata.

Camlin’s bond with M/s. G. C. Laha Pvt. Ltd. was further strengthened with commencement of manufacturing of Camel art material products pioneered in India by my brother Shri Subhash Dandekar in early 60s. It was, indeed, through the interactions with Shri Lokenath Laha and Shri Pasupati Nath Laha that the insight into the consumer psyche of the art colours could further be understood. More importantly, he always shared his view points on the product quality, packaging and the trade related matters. He showed us the magnitude of business opportunities for art material and accessories in spite of strong awareness amongst and preference of the foreign brands by the Indian Artists.

Today M/s. G. C. Laha Pvt. Ltd. under the able guidance of Shri Siddhartha Laha and Shri Partha Laha have maintained the century old tradition of consumer service with smile and respect. No doubt, the unfailing and warm consumer contact, coupled with the availability of any brand or product required by the Artists’ fraternity, makes the customer come back to M/s. G. C. Laha Pvt. Ltd.
